Consisting of Selective Service notice of classification, 2 Dec. 1918; student military pass, 14 Dec. 1918, Co. B, Univ[ersity] of S[outh] C[arolina], S[tudent] A[rmy] T[raining] Corps] Unit, granting Pvt. William L. Cain permission to be absent from company and excused from duties that day, signed by 2nd Lt. James R. Miller; postcard (postmarked 13 May 1919), notifying Cain that J.A. Crawford had arrived safely overseas; Special Orders No. 37, Headquarters, R.O.T.C. Infantry Camp, Camp Lee, Va., 1 Aug. 1919, identifying students, including Cain, who had completed the "Camp Course" and were being proceed to their respective homes; and undated photograph of unidentified man in football uniform, presumably William L. Cain. Other items include printed invitation to "Columbia Tournament and Ball," to be held at Kinsler's Hall, 8 May 1860, with list of managers, and notations re costume ball at 8:00 p.m. and riding at 10:00 a.m.; and an unattributed literary manuscript, "The Mystery," 12 Mar. 1881. Also includes undated and unattributed typewritten poem spoofing South Carolina surnames of Huguenot descent or otherwise related to S.C. history, such as Huger, Legare, Petigru, Porcher, Rhett, Simons, and Waring: "I thank thee, Lord, on bended knee / I'm half Porcher and half Huger...."
